Experience of Club “The House”

Young people, smiles, beautiful faces, new skills, at times a little bit of stress (but only the pleasant kind), less time for everything else, summer and winter camps, seminars, international projects, knowledge and a nice, warm place to have a cup of tea on a cold winter’s day - this is Club “The House” - Youth for United Europe / JEF Latvia.

Club “The House” / JEF Latvia is an organization for young people, who care about other people and other nations, who are interested in World happenings and are willing to take part in building better society in Latvia. Society, which would be more tolerant and open, better informed and well educated. This is the aim members of Club “The House” / JEF Latvia are trying to achieve by organizing entertaining but at the same time educational events for other young people. Club “The House” / JEF Latvia enhances youth in building united Europe and inform them about different European organizations (European Union, Council of Europe, UNESCO, etc.), European culture, history, traditions, sports, social and political processes, lifestyle and IDEAS. We know that they will be the ones who will be shaping our future; we want it to be in a whole new quality.

Club “The House” - Youth for United Europe has been active for more than 8 years. It was founded in the beginning of February 1995 on a coach in a small apartment in the suburb of Riga within a circle of friends. The circle has considerably grown over the years - now there are about 200 members in the club and around 400 supporters. They all come from different parts of Latvia and they usually get involved in the organization through camps and seminars that they attend and get to meet other members of the club.

In club “The House” / JEF Latvia people learn through doing. There are quite a few things we have done over these eights years. To mention only some of them:

+ training of young lecturers on European Union issues;

+ training of young lecturers on human rights issues - Human rights for each and everyone

+ seminars and camp for high school students Youth for the Environmental Rights;

+ seminar for high school students Is Corruption also a Problem for Young People? There was also a research conducted during this project.

+ summer camp Youth about Rights and Responsibilities;

+ bilateral exchange projects with Italy, Norway, Denmark and Germany;

+ project Expedition 2000, where we discussed the rights and problems of minorities;

+ project We Ourselves which discussed the integration problems of minorities in our society and resulted in issuing a booklet on this topic;

+ Latvian Youth Convention on the Future of Europe, which enhances Latvian society in debates about the future models of European development;

+ multilateral exchange project Give me 5, which concerns young people and regional development - what are the possibilities for youth involvement. The other countries involved in this project are Italy, Norway, Great Britain and Sweden;

+ project Time for Europe! with training of trainers, European week and eurobuses during the summer 2003;

+ intensive prereferendum campaign;

+ and many, many more projects.

We have helped to organize:

+ the information campaign about Naturalization process in Latvia, which was implemented in co-operation with Naturalization board Latvia.

+ annual European Week in co-operation with different governmental and non-governmental organizations.

This is just a very short description of what club “The House” / JEF Latvia is. But actually it is all about the people that are part of club’s everyday life. The feeling that they create cannot be put on the paper, however that exact feeling is what Club “The House” / JEF Latvia really is all about.
